About Billie Young : A native Tennessean, artist Billie Young grew up in Nashville has 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Since the early 1970s, she (Billie Young) has painted scenes from many rural areas in and around Middle Tennessee and neighboring Kentucky. As a regionalist, Young specializes in rustic landscapes and historic subjects. Choosing both watercolor and oil mediums, she has studied with private tutors and earned an art degree from Watkins Institute of Art. She spent many years working in commercial art and fashion illustration in Nashville. In 1970s, she began fulltime to devote her time to fine art, developing her own style of painting, which has been called “realistic impressionism.”
Young’s paintings have been shown in many exhibits throughout Tennessee and have been featured on the covers of several Tennessee magazines. Commissions have run the gamut including private residences, historical homes, and a painting of Rock Castle commissioned by the City of Hendersonville for a presentation to its Sister City, Tsuru, Japan in addition to charitable donations benefiting children at risk.
Having an interest in historical subjects, as well as an appreciation for the beauty of picturesque landmarks dotting the countryside, Young’s impressionistic style gives more than merely a realistic rendering. In Young’s work one finds weathered remains of a bygone day, a lifestyle of the past, with a few suggestions of life.
Young comments, “Some of my favorite subjects are found in simple nature and rustic country scenes which are plentiful in my native state of Tennessee. An orchard in bloom humming with bees, the dry rustling of corn in the late fall, a lone crow circling against a gray sky — all bring nostalgic feelings for the subjects I paint. These subjects include the people I loved and their way of life which was a blend of oil lamps, butter being dipped from a churn, apples drying in the sun and hickory smoke. The old and quaint scenes seem to hold a fascination for almost everyone.”
